#137. Read Andy Davis’ review of District 9 “Prawn Again” on Mahala, my current most favourite local website. Mahala means for free and that’s just what the content is, for nothing and on anything. The brainchild of Davis, a former magazine editor (SL) the site is smart and sharp, fresh and visual and carries some of the best and most current thinking and writing on South African art, music, photography and movies. Oh, and it also covers sport and surfing.

Says Davis when I asked: “I have always believed there is a space for an unrestricted South African youth magazine that speaks to an audience of integrated, intelligent, creative South African males & females.” I am on his side.
Mahala’s reason for being and its credo is: “Mahala is a free South African mouthpiece that strives to report and represent what’s really happening along the fault line and in the trenches of South African culture … We’ll always be free, gratis and Mahala. Because you deserve quality information, opinion and entertainment for free!”
And you do. So go on.

District 9 shows black people eating aliens, having sexual relations with aliens and barbaric. Main characters are white and black people are faceless and forgettable (and this is in South Africa where white people are only 10% of the population). It is surprising that most of the times when a white filmmaker makes a film in Africa portrayal of Africans will always be of barbaric and savage people. This film is an insult. But i guess another man’s poison will always be another man’s food.
kzamats, the worst villains in the movie are white people. They do medical experiments on the aliens, and are willing to chop up a human as well (not giving up too much here so as not to spoil this for those who haven’t seen the movie). I don’t personally recall seeing anything in the movie involving sexual relations with aliens, except where a character was falsely accused of that when he was on the run.
I wouldn’t be particularly proud to be any kind of human based on the portrayal in this movie.
