A Postcard a Day from Gauteng

Nothing to do but punt the app (available for all your Apple and Android devices so download it now) created for Gauteng Tourism by the uber-talented super smart, and my most favourite, T-Shirt designer Bradley Kirshenbaum of Love Jozi (and co-creator of one of the city’s other best inventions market on main). Yesterday on the auspicious date of 11/11/11 I got my chance to put my home town Benoni (also the inspiration for this blog) back on the tourist map. For everyone else who is “Straight out of Benoni” this one’s for you.

Brokenhearted that it’s all over… a last fix from Design Indaba 2011. And the highlights of the last day were …
Pass the envelope please

As Mexico’s drug war has escalated so has the number of deadly weapons. Pedro Reyes wanted to do something about it. He came up with a campaign that involved creating a series of TV spots in the “shape of a soap opera” entreating the audience to bring a gun to city hall in exchange for a coupon you could trade for a microwave or other household appliances. It broke the record for the voluntary donation of arms with 1527 guns handed in. They were taken to a factory and melted down and fabricated into 1527 shovels. There was “not a big design improvement” is typical of Reyes’ understatement. Just a change in source material – “from an agent of death to an agent of life” as the shovels were handed over to schools and used to plant trees. Continue reading →

Apple iPhone4 – here today, jewellery tomorrow

#212. With Apple’s iPhone4 just released locally and Moore’s Law showing no signs of leniency our world is increasingly being filled up with piles of techno-junk. As an early adopter of all things new when it comes to technology,  I have now found a way to offset the environmental hazards of my habit. His name is Kevin Friedman, from Frankli Wild Studio in Norwood and he loves Apple Macs, so much so that given the opportunity he will solder, shape, beat and fashion them into something for you or your wall to wear.

Blow it out your vuvuzela

#208 Join in the fray about vuvuzelas that has become more deafening than the trumpet itself this week. Score one to South Africa for getting the word into international headlines, another for causing Twitter to shudder with #vuvuzela overload, a third for making Ronaldo weigh in on this weighty matter (instead of on fast cars and faster women) and give that guy at the rugby match in Wales that was brave enough to blow one a round of applause. It’s something I have written about before, the fact that I like the vuvuzela and its angry-wasp-like sound (cue the insults from the vuvuzela-haters).

#195. Share a little piece on the people you are scared of, or should be scared of, on Facebook. A little article I read in Australian GQ. A magazine. A real magazine with pages that crinkle as you read it in the bath. OK now I am starting to sound like one of those people you should be scared of on Facebook. A bit too much detail.
Along that Facebook route who hasn’t picked up a few “friends” they would never want to spend any time with but can’t help compulsively following.
