#169. Head to the city for lunch. We did that on Saturday after having heard earlier in the week about Lucky Moo. (The name alone would have been enough to send me there). Lucky Moo for Yum Yum Chinese food on the city’s Gandhi Square is where restaurateur Jaco Welgemoed has set up shop, far from his previous ventures which included Cite in Dunkeld, The Circle champagne Bar in Greenside and the Singing Fig in Norwood. It’s also far from his “fine dining” past at around R35 a dish but close to what inspired him to start those new [at the time] restaurants. Delicious food. Great dining concept. Continue reading →

Recommend that if you love reading and food, or recipes, or have any interest in Chinese culture, and/or Taiwan (or all of these) then you should pick up a copy of Emperor Can Wait by Joburg restaurateur Emma Chen. For the uninitiated the title refers to a chinese proverb “The Emperor can wait –while we eat”. First a disclosure – I worked [as an editor] with Chen on the initial manuscript. Now that’s out of the way … the book launched a few days ago with a wedding feast at the Red Chamber, Chen’s restaurant in Hyde Park that is celebrating 20 years of existence (In Joburg restaurant parlance, a lifetime).
That’s 20 years of the best cucumber salad in Johannesburg, possibly the world. There are people who would kill for that recipe and in this city it’s possible they already have.

Eat out while the global economy winds down, Terror Lekota winds up the ANC — first by divorcing the party and then by making plans to start a new one — and rolling bailouts take the place of rolling blackouts as a conversation piece. The place to do it is at the bottom end of Commissioner Street, deep in the heart of Joburg’s old Chinatown.
