A long overdue post on an exhibition that came and went but one that has stayed in my imagination… There is no better word than Huw Morris’ own descriptor of “murky” to describe the territory of his photographic series So, this is desire? In 11 photographs the 30-something photographer’s narrative of love set in a 1970’s South African home pulls at a small thread in the fabric of South Africa’s domestic story and as the viewer you are left with the feeling of helplessly watching something unravel.

Gandhi Square gets a taste of the north
#169. Head to the city for lunch. We did that on Saturday after having heard earlier in the week about Lucky Moo. (The name alone would have been enough to send me there). Lucky Moo for Yum Yum Chinese food on the city’s Gandhi Square is where restaurateur Jaco Welgemoed has set up shop, far from his previous ventures which included Cite in Dunkeld, The Circle champagne Bar in Greenside and the Singing Fig in Norwood. It’s also far from his “fine dining” past at around R35 a dish but close to what inspired him to start those new [at the time] restaurants. Delicious food. Great dining concept.

Joburg signs say beware
#134. Watch out … for Parktown Prawns, those suburban creatures who are as hardy as cockroaches and ugly as prawns and are said to be set for survival in the event of a nuclear holacaust. This sign has cropped up on Glenside Road in Greenside.
